Ras Ghareb wind farm is a 262.5MW near-shore wind project developed near the Gulf of Suez, approximately 30km north-west of Ras Ghareb, Egypt. It is the first independent power producer (IPP) project in the country.  The project was developed by Ras Ghareb Wind Energy, a special purpose joint venture company established by 2 foreign companies and 1 Egyptian contractor, on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis. The total investment in the project was approximately $380m.  The project reached financial closure in December 2017, and construction commenced in 2018. The wind farm started partial operations in October 2019 and achieved full capacity in December of the same year.  The wind farm can generate enough electricity to power 500,000 Egyptian households. It was built in support of the Egyptian Government’s target to supply 20% of electricity from renewable sources by 2022.

Scientific Facts

An ice cube takes up about 9 percent more volume than the water used to make it:

Water is the only known non-metallic substance that expands when it freezes; its density decreases, and it expands approximately 9% by volume. The reason for ice having more volume than liquid water is that in the liquid state water molecules can pack more closely together than in the crystal structure of ice. But to form ice they rearrange into a hexagonal pattern with a huge gap in the middle.

History of Science

Egyptians invented clock in the fourteenth century B.C.E.:
The first recorded invention of any time of clock was the creation of the water clock by the Egyptians in the fourteenth century B.C.E. Sundials, using the shadow cast by the sun to indicate the time of day, were the first timekeeping devices. Water clocks, known as clepsydras, were also used in ancient Egypt, utilizing the flow of water to measure time. One of the oldest and most simple timekeeping devices is the hourglass. The hourglass, also known as a sandglass or sand timer, is a device that uses the flow of sand to measure a specific amount of time. The earliest known hourglass also dates back to ancient Egypt.
