Electric roads – charging your car while driving:
The roads where electric vehicles never need to plug in.
The first wireless electric road in the US has been installed in Detroit, allowing electric vehicles to charge up as they drive along.
Electromagnetic coils were laid under the surface and connected to the city’s power grid. These create an electromagnetic field just above the road that transfers energy to a receiver attached to a vehicle battery through a process known as “inductive charging”. It is similar to the technology used in wireless charging for mobile phones.
But driving along a road where the car gains some additional charge as it travels could help to extend the range of electric vehicles business.
Scientific Facts
There is No Flavour in Food Without Saliva:
We need saliva to taste our food.
In order for food to be tasted, the chemicals from the food must dissolve in saliva. Once the chemicals in the food are dissolved, they can be detected by receptors in our taste buds. Volunteers who produced more saliva tended to score the flavors as more intense, possibly because they swallowed more often and thus forced more aromas into their nasal passages. When there is no saliva in the mouth, the taste buds are not as sensitive to sweet flavors. The taste of food is caused by its chemical compounds. These compounds interact with sensory (receptor) cells in your taste buds. The cells send information to your brain, which helps you identify the taste.
History of Science
Air Conditioners:
In 1902, only one year after Willis Carrier graduated from Cornell University with a master’s in engineering, his first air conditioning unit was in operation. The “Apparatus for Treating Air” was the first of several patents awarded to Willis Carrier in 1906. He is recognized as the “father of air conditioning”. The introduction of centrifugal refrigeration by Willis Carrier was a landmark event, launching modern air conditioning from the factory floor into movie theaters, office buildings and department stores, and treating the general public to its first taste of cool, clean and comfortable “Manufactured Weather.”
