Eid Al Adha 2025 – June 6, 2025

Eid al-Adha (‘Festival of Sacrifice’) is one of the two most important festivals in the Islamic calendar alongside Eid al-Fitr.

Eid al-Adha is typically greeted with joy and excitement and is marked with congregational prayers and festivities that usually include family visits, gatherings, outings and new clothes.  This year (2025), Eid al-Adha started on June 6, 2025.   Celebrations and observances are usually carried forward to the three following days.

Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025 in Cairo

The European Union and Egypt officially launched the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025 at a high-level event in Cairo, signalling a deepening of their collaboration in research and innovation.

The event is part of broader efforts to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation, building on two decades of EU-Egypt collaboration in these fields.

Academics, researchers, innovators, and officials from key Egyptian ministries participated in the launch, showing strong national interest in tapping into EU research opportunities.  Egyptian institutions can now compete for funding and lead projects under Horizon Europe’s 2025 budget, enjoying equal footing with institutions from associated countries.

Beyond funding access, Egypt’s association with Horizon Europe gives it a seat at the table in defining research priorities and forming international research consortia.

Scientific Facts

A person can actually die laughing

Death from laughter is a rare form of death, usually resulting from either cardiac arrest or asphyxiation, that has itself been caused by a fit of laughter.   Laughing too hard may prevent adequate breathing or cause a person to stop breathing, depriving their body of oxygen.  While the concept of “dying of laughter” is often used as a figure of speech, it is possible, though extremely rare, for laughter to trigger a fatal medical event in individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Comedy shows should come with a warning.

History of Science

Artificial intelligence
The last of the greatest inventions in human history is still a work in progress. Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.  According to the current system of classification, there are four primary AI types: reactive, limited memory, theory of mind, and self-aware.

  1. Reactive AI: programmed to provide a predictable output based on the input it receives.
  2. Limited Memory AI: learns from the past and builds experiential knowledge by observing actions or data.
  3. Theory of Mind AI: able to understand and remember emotions, then adjust behaviour based on those emotions while interacting with people.
  4. Self-aware AI: The most advanced type of artificial intelligence, having a level of consciousness and intelligence similar to human beings.
